Segontium Rovers U9’s are a local football team in Caernarfon who have a squad of 26 players of all abilities, they are coached by four volunteers who provide high level coaching, inclusive for everyone, providing equal opportunities for each individual.
Having been with most of the players since the age group of U5’s the main focus for the coaches is getting to know each player as an individual to get the best out of their abilities, whilst also creating a team mentality to improve the whole squad together.
A Family orientated run team, who is a close knit unit creating a positive atmosphere for all the children to thrive.
This season has already started brilliantly for the age group off the field with new Kit sponsor ‘Visit Caernarfon’ and new Training Kit sponsor ‘Deintydd Cybi Dental Practice’ providing the team with fresh Kits for the season.
Comments from Head Coach – Colin Hughes
“It’s been a big journey for all of us since starting off at U5’s level with the children, we have started no less than 38 children on their football journey along the way, paving a way for them to begin their career’s in the best way possible.
I’m looking forward to the season ahead with my coaches and squad of players, having started last season slightly behind other teams as we finished the season before earlier and did not enter any tournaments during the summer due to our squad size, we endured a tough start to our campaign, as expected.
I used this to monitor our progress as the season went on, our whole squad were putting in the hard work in training and games and were improving each week.
The First two tournaments we entered, neither of our squads came out of the group stages, but we weren’t down hearted as this provided us with the evidence of levels that we needed to reach as coaches and players whilst also providing experience of tournament football.
In the last 2 tournaments of the season both squads reached 2 finals in Nantlle Vale’s tournament which were the Europa League and Conference League level, we lost one final on penalties and the other by one goal, but the sense of achievement for us as a unit was massive, as all 16 players who were available on that day received a medal each, having all played their part equally on the day.
In the last tournament in Llanrug to close the season our squad reached the quarter final of the Champions League level again loosing by one goal.
The development towards the end of the season was for all to see, which is the main reason I’m looking forward to seeing the steps the squad will make this season, also the challenges that we will face as coaches to improve the level of all the individuals, ourselves and the team as a whole.
I would like to personally thank Michael James McHale of ‘Visit Caernarfon’ for sponsoring out Kit and also Iolo & Nicola Jones of ‘Deintydd Cybi Dental Practice’ for sponsoring out Training tops for the seasons ahead”
